AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for June 26, 2025

Good Gray Day to All:

The weather matches our mood on this very sad day in our Almonte community. As a church family, we continue to support Archer’s family, fellow students, teachers, the bus driver and others in our thoughts and prayers.

Tomorrow Night at 7:00 pm: Instead of a Karaoke Night, we will gather together in the Social Hall for a time of sharing our grief and thoughts especially around the great mystery: “Why would a good God allow this to happen?” Our resident professional therapist, Beth Robertson, will be here with us; everyone of all ages is most welcome.

Sunday at 10:30: We will celebrate Canada Day; please wear your red and white. It’s also a celebration of our June birthdays so there will be cake🎂🎂

Very special thoughts, Rev. Heather

PS: This is the catalpa tree in full bloom on this dreary day!

Good Beautiful Morning to All:

Pictured here are the newest members of AUC: Ellie, Olivia, Jack and Dot; these young people were confirmed last Sunday in a most inspiring service. Our very best wishes go with them as they live out their faith from day to day.

Tomorrow Night at 7:00 p.m.: Movie Night, “Being Elmo,” a story about bringing the puppet, Elmo, to life. Hotdogs, popcorn, drinks, etc. are served. Come and bring some friends.

Saturday, June 21st from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm.: “Celebrating Solstice Together” beginning with breakfast at the Arena; ending with music, and various Indigenous events throughout the day at Riverfront Park on Spring Street. Sponsored by Mississippi Mills All My Relations and others. Come and enjoy the drumming, dancing, storytelling, crafts and food!

This Sunday at 10:30 am: We are celebrating National Indigenous Peoples’ Day with our Indigenous friend, Glenn Morrison, delivering the message. We know Glenn as the trumpeter; he will be sharing his music with us too!

I hope our students, teachers, and bus drivers are anticipating their summer holidays; and, of course, everyone else too! 😎🎶🌻

With fondest wishes and blessings,

Rev. Heather 😍🙏

Good windy day to all:

Today’s picture is Rev. Emmett dressed in the garb of a century ago, as part of the Sunday School’s celebration of Pentecost and the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada. It was a most meaningful service of colour and creativity.

This Sunday also promises to be very special; don’t miss it:

AT 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary: The Confirmation of four Faith-filled young people followed by the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

At 10:45, we will sing our way into the Social Hall where the region’s 100th anniversary celebration of our United Church of Canada will be Live-streamed. Beverages and cake will be served; please bring cookies to share.

On Friday night, the 20th at 7:00 pm: Movie Night featuring ‘Being Elmo’; popcorn, hot dogs, etc. will be served. This is our last movie until autumn; join us for a fun night out!

Needed Gardeners! For the outside gardens at AUC. A roster of volunteers is being organized; please contact Evelyn Ironside at 613-209-0514 for more info.

All very special wishes to the young people writing exams and counting the days until school is done!!

Hello All:
Isn’t the world here in Almonte a beautiful place these days? I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy all the gorgeous blooms, singing birds, sprouting seeds, etc. 🌺🌼😍

What’s going on this Sunday:
Our wonderful Sunday School will lead our Pentecost Service; I’ve seen the script and it promises to be ‘awesome’.

Immediately after coffee and goodies, our Decorating Team are looking for helpers to bring  buckets, rags, etc. to give the sanctuary a deep clean. Many hands will make light work….just like the cleanup crew did outside a few weeks ago.

Looking ahead, on June 15th at 10:00 am, we will confirm four youth into AUC and the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

At 10:45, we will move into the Social Hall to join the Region’s 100th Anniversary Service in Ottawa via Live-Stream.

Let’s continue to pray for our Northern and Western neighbours, and fire fighters who are affected by the horrendous fires. 🙏

The flower is an Itoh peony with petals like tissue paper

Blessings, Rev. Heather 🙏🌺🌼🌸😍

Good rainy day to all:

I’m on the run between burials and planning a funeral so I’ll make this short. Many, many thanks to all those volunteers who make AUC such a very special place to minister; your many talents are much appreciated.

The AUC 3rd Annual Plant Sale was another success having raised just over $1600. Everyone’s hard work and dedication to this event is very appreciated.

Thank you as well to those who helped in our spring garden clean-up.

For the 100th Anniversary of the United Church celebrations, plans are under way to live - stream the service at AUC . Stay tuned for more details.

See you on Sunday. Rev. Heather😍🌺
PS: A tulip at the Ottawa tulip festival.

Good Cloudy Morning to All:

A cardinal was singing his unique melody yesterday in the neighbour’s flowering crab tree but he was shy; I couldn’t get his picture amid the pink splendour.
So I have included a photo of some very wise birds building their nests high in the letters of a nursery with a huge roof overhang. And we like to think that we are God’s most clever creatures!

It’s a busy weekend at AUC:
On Saturday morning at 8:00, rain or shine,  the AUC Plant Sale Team will be selling plants and potted flowers; and the Likulezi  group will be offering breakfast, lunch goodies and baking.  Plan to support these dedicated volunteers in our AUC midst. Please look up the emails sent on Tuesday for more information.

On Sunday at 10:30 am: Margie Graff will tell us about her recent trip up north to deliver school supplies.  Her story will fit right in with the scripture reading  from John 15 where Jesus says: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Anything remaining from the sales will be offered during coffee time.

Also, Sunday after church would be a great time for some people to stay and help to brighten up the church gardens.  They are in need of some spring cleaning!

The Social Hall flower bed with the beautiful daffodils needs some tender loving care as does the flower bed on the far side of the sanctuary.  So, if you have some free time after church, bring your gardening gloves and maybe a spade and some weed pulling tools and we will get things looking lovely again!!  Many hands make light work so it should not take long if several of us work on it!!

I hope you enjoy a great long weekend and have an opportunity to take in all the wonderful splendours of spring.🌺🌸🌼

Blessings to all from Rev. Heather🙏😍

AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for April 17, 2025

Hello AUC Friends:

It never ceases to amaze me how the smallest bulbs push their way through the hard ground, dead leaves, and other obstacles to reveal their true springtime beauty. A true lesson for us humans too!

What’s on this Holy Week:
Tomorrow, Good Friday at 10:30 am: A solemn Worship Service with readings and hymns; we will leave the church in silence.

At 12 Noon: The Almonte Walk of The Cross beginning at the R.C. Church, then AUC, followed by the Community Presbyterian, Almonte Baptist, the Town Hall and Naismith statue, and ending at the Hillside Reformed Presbyterian Church for a short service and refreshments. People are welcome to participate in any or all of the walk; it will take place rain or shine. All welcome.

Easter Sunday at AUC at 10:30 pm: Worship for Easter Sunday with the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Plan to attend this service when we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord in worship, sacrament and joyful Christian fellowship.

Friday, April 25th at 7:00 pm: Movie Night at AUC with “Julie and Julia” featuring Meryl Streep and Ann Adams; it’s a movie about how an amateur cook sets out to make all 224 recipes in Julia Child’s Cookbook. It promises to be really fun!

Sunday, April 27th at 10:30 am: Worship will be a Celebration of Earth Day. Also after the service,  Emmett Badger’s Bake Sale in support of Orangutans in need:‘Cakes for Apes for International Animal Rescue’. Donations accepted.

In the midst of all the Easter celebrations, if you would like to reflect on the true meaning of Easter, read (in order) how the Gospel writers interpreted the Resurrection: Mark 16: 1-8; Matthew 28:1-20; Luke 24:1-49; and John 20:1-29. Which is your favourite and how does it speak especially to you?

I hope you and yours enjoy a truly blessed Easter season; may all the joys of springtime bring you hope, peace and love.
Fondest wishes to all, Rev. Heather 🙏🙏

PS: The daffodils planted  along the church hall will be in bloom for Easter Sunday! 😍😍

AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for April 10, 2025

Hello AUC Friends:

What an absolutely beautiful Camping Service last Sunday was provided by the Sunday School, Youth Group and Helpers. Many, many thanks to all!

And the Annual Meeting which followed was pretty short and dull….just the way we like it!

What’s Happening during Holy Week:

Palm Sunday, April 13th at 10:30 am: Wear or bring a brightly coloured scarf for worship as we wave them (rather than palm branches) to remember the Jerusalem parade so long ago.

Tuesday, April 15th at 1:00 pm: The Study Group continues looking at “Something Sacred;” the chapters are ‘Love One Another’ (pages 80-81) and ‘Improvising Hope’ (pages 82-83). Plan to join us for singing, discussion and fellowship.

Good Friday, April 18th at 10:30 am: A sombre service to remember the tragic events of this day. All most welcome.

At 12 Noon: The Walk of the Cross begins at The Holy Name of Mary RC church; the second stop is Almonte United Church. People are invited to participate in some or all of this Almonte Ecumenical Event.

With fond wishes and blessings to all,

Rev. Heather🙏🙏🙏

AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for April 1, 2025

I hope people survived last weekend’s storm; we can really empathize with the people who are coping with the terrible ice storm. I’m writing this message early this week in case our beloved secretary gets iced in on the Ottawa River on Thursday morning.

This Sunday, April 6th at 10:30 is Camping Sunday.

The service will be led by our own Jack Lockhart with the very capable assistance of our Sunday School and Youth Group.

Plan to wear your “Camping Clothes;” there might even be a prize for the most interesting hat! Our service then moves into the Social Hall where we will do a special craft, conclude the service, and sing “O Canada.”

Annual Meeting: Immediately after the service, a light lunch will be enjoyed while we participate in our Annual Meeting (postponed from last Sunday). Please plan to attend this very important event in the life of our congregation.

In case you are wondering about Holy Week and Easter, these are the services:

Palm Sunday, April 13th at 10:30;

Good Friday, April 18th at 10:30;

The Walk of the Cross at Noon departing from the R.C. Church; Easter Sunday, April 20th at 10:30 with the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Enjoy today’s sunshine and take good care.

Fondest greetings to all, Rev. Heather 🙏

AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for March 27, 2025

Good Sunny Day to All:

What a great day before the predicted storm comes! Don’t put the salt away yet!

In the interest of safety and caution, we have decided to CANCEL this Sunday’s service and Annual Meeting. I hope it gives you an opportunity to relax and ponder how the seasons are, sometimes, reluctant to change. (Just like humans!)

Today, March 27th: If you are interested in the ‘Marvellous Monday Meals’ that are being prepared, the team is making them on Monday so please contact Mary Smiley at marysmiley1@gmail.comif you are interested. On Tuesday at 1:00 to 2:30 pm, the Study Group will be discussing and singing our way through “Something Sacred: Reflections on Music and Faith.”  Plan to join us if you can; it’s a new chapter each week.

Look for more news next week about April 6th when our Youth Group will lead worship for ‘Camping Sunday’. It promises to be great so please mark it on your calendar.

Take very good care; stay safe and warm.

Fond regards to all, Rev. Heather 😍🎶🙏

AUC Weekly Newsletter from Rev. Heather for March 20, 2025

Hello All:
Both the calendar and the outside world are telling us that spring is coming.
These are the snowdrops here at AUC pushing their way through the mulch…a miracle of nature!

What’s going on this Sunday?
Our scripture lesson is Luke 13: 1-9 where Jesus tells the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree….a story to which we can all relate.
We’ll also be celebrating the March birthdays with cake and coffee after the service.

Remember to look up, print, and read the 2024 Annual Report on the AUC website for next Sunday’s annual meeting.

I hope you are able to enjoy the promises of springtime all around us.

Blessings from Rev. Heather 🙏🎶🌺🇨🇦
